'We're going to court? OK!': Developer and their HOA gets "throat punched repeatedly" by fines after threatening landowners for refusing to sell

With progress comes expansion, and with expansion comes development… the bounds of society creeping beyond where they once were, bringing with them change. We'd like to think that this change is always good, but the reality is that it's not always for the better. Opportunists will be right there waiting to strike when the shifting sands of time and change bring them the chance to take advantage.

When this couple bought their dream piece of land out in the middle of nowhere, they completed the picture by building what, at that point, was their dream home. They lived there for several years, and when the opportunity presented itself later on, they moved on to the next pursuit, renting out their former home. It wasn't long before a housing developer came knocking, looking to build suburban houses in the once-rural area. The couple refused to sell, meaning that their home was the only one that wasn't part of the HOA that would form in the new neighborhood—something that the developer and their HOA wouldn't soon forget. They'd resort to less-than-dishonest means in order to attempt to get the couple to sell or otherwise sign their rights away and join the HOA

There's a certain poetry to a nefarious entity's ability to bring wrath down upon themselves through the sheer brazenness and insistent audacity of their dishonest pursuits. The problem is that behavior has been learned and emboldened through years and years of success, so by the time they pay the price, it has been going on for some time. This developer got away with it long enough before they came to realize they had finally messed with the wrong couple.
